Worship 1/2 (revised)

September 18, 2017 Leave a comment

Years ago I made a though-provoking video to get Christians (myself included) to think more about the words we sing, and ask if it lines up with the lives we live. The resulting video was a fake infomercial for a worship CD full of satirical lyrics. Some may say it’s borderline sacrilegious, but I would disagree and say it’s purposeful to start a conversation. Recently I remade it, since the old one wasn’t even HD. Below is the result of the remake, as well as the older version. It’s also kind of fun to point out that my wife helped me with the first one (it’s not easy or even possible to film yourself!) and my son helped with the new one. Here’s to no more half-heartead devotion!

60+ performers, 12 nations, 8 languages, 1 song

There are lots of projects that get me excited, but this one was a once in a lifetime opportunity. This music video is one of my proudest creative achievements to date.

You could say that it was 20 years in the making. I wrote this song from the shortest chapter in the Bible when I was in high school. My band used to play it occasionally in youth group, but we didn’t do too much with it. Years later I ended up recording it myself in a home studio project, but I didn’t really like how it came out. Now fast forward to a couple of years ago.

I work as the video editor for the U.S. office of GNPI (www.gnpi.org). We have video-savvy people in strategic places all over the world. My fun little song says, “Praise the Lord all you nations…” It seemed like the perfect time to use the song to the fullest potential, using the vast network of international producers now at my disposal! I pitched the idea to our creative team and then to the executive team. It was a big project. Some called it EPIC! After nearly a year of planning, six months of work from 12 nations and eight languages around the world, this music video is now being released!

We hope it brings smiles to many faces and a small glimpse of Revelation 7:9, “…a vast crowd, too great to count, from every nation and tribe and people and language, standing in front of the throne and before the Lamb.”

If you like the video, would you help us by sharing it with your friends? We’ve also created a behind the scenes video with details about those who participated in the project. If you’d like to see more of that backstory, check this out short video:

Great is Thy Faithfulness

My sister is getting married today. I’m excited for her! God IS faithful.

I’ll be playing this song at the wedding while her friend sings it. It’s a great hymn! A classic.

Here’s a little video I shot over a lunch break to show her friend the arrangement. I think sometime in the future I might want to do another home studio recording of an album or EP of pure hymns.

Darrell Evans “O What a Wonder” (Live)

Darrell Evans is one of the great worship leaders of our time. I’ve listened to his songs for a long time now and every time I’ve seen him live, there are some amazing times of intimate worship. Last night was no exception. The venue was different. It was a house concert, and everyone present knew each other. I only knew Darrell, but these kind folks welcomed me in as family. We ate finger foods and then sat down in the living room, and then here’s a sample of what happened… (3:50 is my favorite part of this video)

What is New Liturgy?

Here’s a great discussion I had with Stephen Proctor and Aaron Niequist about their New Liturgy collaboration. Watch the vimeo video mentioned in the conversation here: https://vimeo.com/56877843

Worship as a Lifestyle

worshipGodalways

The simple subtlety of this type on effect will get people’s attention at the start of your worship service. Right before singing, it will reinforce the point that worship is a lifestyle that extends way past the music we’ve come to identify as “worship.’ Every aspect of the service and life itself is our worship to God.

Darrell Evans Interview

September 27, 2011 Leave a comment

A year ago, I interviewed Darrell Evans on worship. I thought it’d be good to post it here now, especially since he just launched a kickstarter campaign for a new worship project. Darrell’s a great guy, and his thoughts on worship and the Christian life were so good, so let me share it with you now:

Here’s a new song that will be on the new album (live from our church):

Last, but not least, consider pledging to Darrell’s kickstarter campaign. You can help make this project a reality, and get a CD as a benefit. What’s not to like about that? Find out more for yourself right here:
